JSA club opioid bill passes at convention

Viewpoint’s Junior State of America club successfully passed legislation at the Regional Convention on February 23. The bill, regarding Stricter Oversight of Opioid Prevention, was chosen to be presented and passed in the full Senate and House Committee Sessions. The bill proposed action to create a unified, national prescription drug monitoring program database.

The Junior State of America is student-run, non-partisan youth organization to strengthen American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society.

“In our current political environment, it is refreshing to watch young people discuss issues of national importance in a civil and thoughtful manner,” JSA Chief Executive Officer Ken White said. “These are issues that the students themselves are working on together to craft solutions.”

Students met in committees to amend bills, negotiate with their fellow legislators on which bills get passed, and debate the bills in the Senate and the House. Students interested in participating in Viewpoint’s JSA club should contact Lauren Tepper (’20).
