Inside the VALT: October 14-20

It was another successful week for Viewpoint Athletics, punctuated by the Volleyball team clinching a playoff berth, the football team winning in Temecula, and strong progress made both on the trails and the tennis courts. Next week is crucial for every team, so let’s keep going strong!

Girls Volleyball

The Viewpoint Girls Volleyball team played in three matches last week, emerging with a playoff berth and a second place finish in the Gold Coast League. On Monday, they played at Brentwood, winning in four (25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16). On Wednesday, they faced Crossroads at home, winning in a blowout (25-7, 25-14, 25-10). The Patriots had 16 aces in the match, led by five from Deja Bickers (’20) and four from sophomore Clare Williams. Thursday was Senior Night, but an MVP-type performance from Deja and an inspired rendition of The Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” by our Navy was not enough to beat Windward. The game was a back and forth marathon, ending in five sets (25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25, 6-15). Next week, the Volleyball team begins competing in the CIFSS D4 Playoffs, hosting Foothill Tech Thursday Night in the PFAC, game starting at 6:00. Foothill Tech enters the game with a 10-11 record, tying for second in the Tri-Valley League. Come out and support the Pats in their playoff run!

Football

The football team traveled to Temecula on Saturday to face the 6-1 Cornerstone Christian Crusaders, leaving with a 33-6 dub. Junior CJ Carr was crucial for the victory, catching a touchdown and returning a punt for another score as well. Sophomore Logan Tom ran for a touchdown, while fellow sophomore Johnson Wu added a sack for the Pats on defense. The Patriots will look to extend a two-game winning streak against Carpinteria next week, in our Homecoming Game on Friday night at 7 at Calabasas High School. Be there!

Girls Tennis

The Varsity Tennis Team played twice this week, falling short to Crossroads 6-12 on Tuesday, but defeating Sierra Canyon by the same scoreline on Thursday. Doubles teams KJ Eilenberg (’20) and Dylan Armour (’21), Hannah Keyes (’21) and Jenny Huang (’20), and Kimarie Payne and Prianka Tuli (both ’21) combined to sweep all 9 sets against Sierra. The team plays at Brentwood on Tuesday, but next Wednesday is Senior Day for the team! Be sure to come out and support our four seniors: Lauren Tepper, KJ Eilenberg, Grace Lord-Alge, and Jenny Huang! The match starts at 2:30 at Pepperdine.

Cross Country

Cross Country did not have any official competitions this week, but the team ran Sycamore Canyon on Saturday, running some of the longest distances of the season. Seniors Thomas Matthew and Ronnie Orosky ran fifteen miles in an hour and forty one minutes, while Max Wolff and Lizzie Scott (both ’20) got lost and ran nearly 17 miles! Next Friday, the team will compete in the World’s Largest Cross Country Invitational: Mt SAC Invitational, at Mt San Antonio College in Walnut. Captain Ronnie Orosky is excited for the race: “We’re ready to approach the largest and hilliest meet in the US because of our constant training on the terrain. At Clovis, we had so many of our boys saying the hill was their favorite part, so now we got a course full of them.” Best of luck on Friday to all our runners!

“Volleyball Senior Night was super intense! The Navy really showed up and supported the girls team, and started off the night off right with ‘I believe’. It was a great night and hopefully the spirit will carry over for other teams, like girls tennis! Volleyball has our first playoff game on Thursday. Hopefully everyone comes to support us then too!” – Jordan Moore (’20), Navy Captain and Volleyball Senior
