Olympus has fallen – Boys basketball season ends by losing to Venice in the regional final
March 10, 2022
After sumptuously crushing Mt.Carmel in the semi-finals, Viewpoint School took on Venice High School in the regional final of 2022 CIF State Boys Basketball Championship Division III. Despite sailing through peaceful waters, Viewpoint’s opponent this time made sure to give Viewpoint a good challenge, even rocking the boat. In fact, Venice high school’s performance flipped a boat with tremendous momentum on its head, as Viewpoint School won their last two games by margins of more than twenty points.
In hindsight, Viewpoint School were down in majority of the game versus Venice, a situation that the players, including supporters, are not familiar with. When the half-time buzzer sounded, Viewpoint School were losing 27 to 32.
“This is something we were not used to; we have to remember that our job is not finished. We have to get our team in a better morale, because they can do a spectacular job on the field with confidence.” Senior Max Wiseman told the Patriot during half-time intervals.
Venice were very stubborn under the basket, blocking virtually every single lay-ups Viewpoint tried to make. Jumping higher and defending in numbers, Venice’s solid defence established a penetrating offensive, which in numerous instances, had the Viewpoint fans silenced.
“It was difficult for us, our defence cannot be described in equal terms with Venice’s.” a supporter commented on the game at full-time. It was also a game full of frustration, which was exceptionally captured when Senior Andrew Younan accidentally miss-dribbled the basketball during a break-away.
“It was a tough game,” Junior Jesse Hutchinson said to the Patriot, “playing such a great team tells you need to be ultra focused; we were not…”
Viewpoint Head of School Mr.Mark McKee was full of praise of the team in a post-match interview. “I’m just proud of our team. They have played well to be here, and they have fought really hard during the state tournament. Tonight we are here because they have done so well,” said McKee.
Viewpoint School Boys Basketball season will end with a defeat at home. The home supporters were indeed disappointed to see Venice lift the trophy that was rewarded to the champions of the regional final, the final score was 62 to 55 to end a season of thrills.
