Viewpoint Swim had an exciting week. On Wednesday, April 24th, league prelims took place. To qualify for finals in an individual event, you had to place top 6 in your event. Viewpoint had 65 individual swims, 63 making finals, and 46 season best times! Thursday, the tradition of the seniors cooking dinner for the team continued as eight swimmers shaved their heads in preparation for league finals. Finally, the day arrived. At finals, there were 87-time drops, 9 CIF cuts, and most importantly, the boy’s team won their 19th straight league title and the girls won their 17th. On Sunday, the 28th, the team honored the 6 seniors on the team, Jasper Crenshaw, Chase Cohen, Eileen Portillo, August Yin, Azim Stack, and Captain Carter Ross. Between them, they have had 8 team titles and 2 CIF runner-up finishes.
I got the chance to hear from a member of the boy’s varsity team, freshman Miles Goodman. Miles swam the 200 and 100-yard freestyle this year. He described the swim season as “a difficult grind that feels like it takes so long, but throughout showing spirit at meets and bonding over practices the end creeps up on you and you don’t realize the strength you gained or connections you improved along the way until it’s over”. I also talked to a member of the girl’s varsity team, Shoshana Lindon. She swam the 200 and 500-yard freestyle this year. I asked her how her experience has been on the team for the last 3 years. She said, “I absolutely love the supporting community within the swim team and it is so inspirational being around so many motivated and fun people”.
The Viewpoint Swim Team is an amazing opportunity for the 45 swimmers who worked incredibly hard, showing up to 5-9 practices a week. I look forward to writing another championship article next year!
