Have you seen those kids flooding Sephora to buy creams, moisturizers, face masks, toners, serums, and more? They are known on TikTok as “Sephora kids”. But is what they’re buying all that good for young skins? Some of these products can cause allergic reactions, rashes, and skin burns. Retinol and hyaluronic acid are the most common components in these products that kids are using. Kids are even using anti-aging creams that are used for improving wrinkles! Children are building collections of these trendy and costly products, like Drunk Elephant’s $134 serum.
Most of the people we interviewed said that they were influenced to buy skincare products from social media. These kids buy many of these products because they see influencers using them on social media. Skincare brands send product reviews (PR) to influencers for review. These influencers make the products sound perfect so their audience will buy them. However, not all of these products are good for kids to use. Skincare brands use a variety of bright colors to attract customers like Glow Recipe, Drunk Elephant, and Laneige.
So what can we do? Instead of thinking kids shouldn’t be using products, maybe think of it the other way around. California is considering banning kids under the age of 13 to buy over-the-counter skincare products or cosmetic products. So what can they use instead?
