On Tuesday, February 19th, Cary Lucas threw the game of a lifetime to emphatically beat Sylmar 6-2 at Birmingham High School. Lucas is the ace of Viewpoint’s pitching rotation and the captain of the baseball team. He is currently a senior and has been at Viewpoint since kindergarten. Lucas is committed to Occidental College in order to further his education and baseball career.

Against Sylmar, Lucas pitched a complete game striking out fourteen of the total twenty-one outs. He racked up those K’s thanks an overpowering eighty-five MPH fastball and a sharp, deceiving curveball. The fourteen strikeouts were a career high for the ace. After the game, Lucas commented on the game and attributed his success to his “electric fastball and sharp slider which really complimented each other really well”. He said that, “that night was definitely the hardest I have ever thrown in my life”. Along with an impressive display of hitting from Viewpoint’s offense, Lucas’ dominant performance on the mound was more than enough to give Viewpoint the 6-2 victory.

Lucas began playing baseball at two years old and has loved the game ever since. He says that his favorite baseball moment was “beating Sierra Canyon for the first time in school history last year. I pitched the full game, and we stunned them 9-5 at Sierra”. This is one of the defining moments of his high school career, and proved to everyone that he was truly a star.

He practices or plays in a game for Viewpoint six days a week, and his dedication to the game as well as his hard work ethic is why he is one of the best baseball players in Viewpoint Varsity baseball history. Lucas is a tremendous teammate and leader. When asked what the captain means to him and the team, long-time teammate and close friend, Asher Sabah, said that, “Cary to me is a friend first, but on the field, there is no one else I would rather compete with. To the team, Cary is a leader and most importantly, he shows each team member how to work hard and better oneself mentally and physically during practice and games while also having fun, because after all it is just a game”.

In addition to playing for Viewpoint, Lucas also plays for the baseball club TB SoCal, one of the top travel programs in the country. He has played in many national events and showcases, traveling to Arizona, New York, Texas, and more to show off his skills on the mound.  At these events, the pitcher was watched by hundreds of college and professional scouts. He was recruited by numerous colleges and recently committed to attend and play baseball for Occidental College.

Lucas’ illustrious baseball career so far has taught him the values of “hard work” and “persistence.”

These important lessons push him to be better in all facets of his life, from inside the classroom to out on the field. Lucas has a bright future ahead of him, and everyone who knows him can’t wait to see what he will do with his talent.
