A 13-year-old Austin Appelbee has been hailed a hero after swimming for four hours alone in the harsh Pacific Ocean to save his family. While on a beach day with his family, including his mother, Joan Applebee, and two younger brothers, they decided to go on a kayaking and paddleboarding trip.
All of a sudden, the oceans became harsh, Austin and his mother both lost their oars, leading the kayak to flip over and begin filling with water. The family was stranded at sea and what was meant to be a fun hour on the water turned into 8-10 terrifying hours.
Joanne sent Austin to get help, where he showed courage when he swam back 2.5 miles to shore and then ran another mile to call for help. Now, the family is all alive and well, reminding us all of what the courage and strength of children can accomplish.
